Fumiya Odagawa :

Jul 30 - Aug 9, 2026

PRESS RELEASE:

THE LOOP GALLERY is pleased to present Living out the Quiet of Summer, a solo exhibition by Fumiya Odagawa, opening on July 30, 2026, in collaboration with EVERANDART.

As summer quietly gives way to another season, the landscape itself appears almost unchanged, while the air subtly begins to shift. The exhibition's title, Living out the Quiet of Summer, reflects this delicate transition, turning its gaze toward the moments when memory, emotion, and human relationships quietly transform alongside the changing seasons.

Fumiya Odagawa creates paintings in which experiences and memories drawn from different times and places coexist within a single pictorial space. Figures, animals, flowers, fruit, and seascapes emerge from fragments of everyday life and moments encountered during his travels, converging into a unified landscape. Rather than depicting events themselves, Odagawa explores the emotional and temporal space that surrounds them.

Underlying his practice is the sensibility of Nihonga (Japanese painting). Through carefully composed negative space, the subtle rhythm of ma (interval), and delicately layered translucent color, Odagawa transforms the formal language of Nihonga into a contemporary pictorial structure in which multiple temporalities and places quietly resonate within a single image.

The new works presented in this exhibition are not paintings of summer itself. Instead, they dwell on the lingering presence of what has passed and the quiet emergence of emotions that have yet to find words. Living out the Quiet of Summer explores how memory and emotion accumulate through continual transition, offering a compelling view of the current direction of Odagawa's painting practice.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I always find myself chasing seasons that have hurried too far ahead of me. By the time I get to work on a piece, I am already late. With each passing year, I have slowly gathered the feelings and experiences needed to paint. Lately, I have come to understand that my art requires a certain nostalgia for what has already slipped away, thinking of winter in spring, of summer in autumn.

In my paintings, motifs such as dusk, butterflies, and unspoken words appear again and again, and even scenes that seem as though nothing is happening are attempts to capture things already passed and emotions quietly fading. Memories do not return in neat, complete forms once they have departed. They come back blurred, wayward, and incomplete. They wander into landscapes from elsewhere, mingling with unrelated light and wind. And thus, time that should have long since ended suddenly alters one’s sense of the present. One realises that feelings believed to belong to the past have never truly gone anywhere.

I often paint through the night, working until the edge of my studio wall begins to glow with the blue light of dawn. In those hours, what had lain submerged inside me surfaces, and I come to understand what it is that still holds me fast. Works that emerge from those hours tend to depict not the moment when something happens, but what comes before and after. It may be the foretelling of an unforeseen meeting, or a parting that can be seen approaching from far away.

Perhaps it is precisely what cannot be known — those arrivals that cannot be predicted — that belongs beside the act of making, and that is able to linger long within a person.
