Gianluca Malgeri & Arina Endo: Let me count the ways

この度THE LOOP GALLERYは、2023年6月3日（土）から6月23日（金）まで、Gianluca Malgeri とArina Endoによる展覧会『Let me count the ways』を開催いたします。
この展覧会は、2015年の「Edge of Chaos」（キュレーション：Vita Zaman、ヴェネチア）、「Homo Ludens」（Magazzino、ローマ）から2019年「Mery-Go-Round」（アユミ、東京）の一連の展示を完結させるものです。彼らの芸術的研究は作品発表と共に進化し、本展では全く新しい「帰郷」というテーマに焦点を当てています。
MalgeriとEndoによって2015年に制作された最初の作品は、子供の遊具のパーツを3次元のコラージュに組み合わせて描かれた架空の「都市」であり、2013年から彼らが研究を続けてきたテーマでした。二人は「都市」のテーマをイタリアの児童文学「ピノッキオの冒険」の主人公ピノッキオの人物像と彼の子供時代を乗り越える為の内なる冒険に関連付けることで複雑な立体作品を制作しました。
また、2019年には個別に構想したパーツを複雑な構造体に組み合わせて浮遊させた立体作品を発表しました。これまでのテーマに新たな息吹を吹き込んだこの作品は、鑑賞者を天空の世界へと誘いました。
そして今回の「Let Me Count the Ways」では、代表作の1つであるインスタレーション作品「Planetary garden」と共に、これまで1つのテーマを多方向へと展開しながら歩んできた二人が、旅路の中で一度足を止め、迎えた「帰郷」の心境を表す一連の作品群を展示します。
故郷の自然を想像させる素朴な木の枝と、繊細な銅で描く遊び心に溢れた遊具・アーキテクトは、私たちの中に眠る少年少女だった頃の純粋な心に光を当てつつ、日々前進することの重要性とこれまで歩んできた軌跡から新たなエネルギーを得ることの意義を教えてくれます。
Let Me Count the Ways is the title of the new exhibition that Gianluca Malgeri and Arina Endo will be presenting at The Loop Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. The exhibition will open June 3rd, 2023 and stay until ...... 2023.
Let Me Count the Ways marks yet another collaboration between Malgeri and Endo, thus bringing to completion a circle started in 2015 with the exhibitions Edge of Chaos (Venice, curated by Vita Zaman) and Homo Ludens (Magazzino, Rome), then moved on with Mery-Go-Round (2019, Ayumi, Tokyo). Their artistic research evolved through several stages: with Let Me Count the Ways, the duo is now moving towards new developments and directions, likely in a less programmatic manner compared to the previous installments.
The first works realized by Malgeri and Endo in 2015 revolved around imaginary and fantastic
cities, which were built by assembling parts of children's playground (that the artists began
studying in 2013) into three-dimensional collages. The evolution of this logic led to the transformation of these "cities" into a complex organism, linked to the figure of Pinocchio and his inner journey to overcome childhood.
Again, in 2019, the two artists injected new life into this body of works by imagining new, flying structures, individually envisioned but also pictured as articulated and "light" systems that invited the viewer to imagine themselves in a space beyond the earthly realm (Mery-Go-Round).
In Let me Count the Ways, the artists opt for a composition of individual elements and showcase a series of works that refer to a "homecoming", after following imaginary, inner and orbital trajectories. Each artwork in the exhibition, in some way, contains the previous ones and opens up to possible and new developments; like a multi-directional walk, the exhibition seems to remind us of the importance of moving forward, whilst being mindful of the new energy gained from the steps already taken.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Gianluca Malgeri (ジャンルカ・マルジェリ)
イタリア南部出身。1996年から2000年までフィレンツェの美術アカデミーで絵画コースを受講しました。1998年には、イタリアのアート雑誌「Flash Art」に初めて掲載されました。2001年には、イタリア・コモのラッティ財団でアーティスト・レジデンスに参加。
そこでマリーナ・アブラモヴィッチと出会い、その後数々のプロジェクトで共同作業を行いました。2002年から2004年まで、イタリア・ヴェネツィアのIUAV大学で視覚芸術の高度コースに参加しました。
この期間中にオラファー・エリアソンと出会い、その後2004年から2008年まで彼のベルリンのスタジオで働きました。2008年以降、ジャンルカ・マルジェリは完全に自身の芸術活動に専念しています。
Born in southern Italy, attended the painting course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence from 1996 to 2000. In 1998, he obtained his first publication in Flash Art, a renowned Italian art magazine. In 2001, he participated in an artist residency at the Ratti Foundation in Como, where he had the opportunity to meet Marina Abramovic and later teamed up with her for several projects. From 2002 to 2004, he attended the advanced course in visual arts at the IUAV University in Venice. During this period, he had the chance to meet Olafur Eliasson and subsequently worked in his Berlin studio from 2004 to 2008. Since 2008, Gianluca Malgeri has been fully dedicated to his artistic work.
Arina Endo (エンドウ・アリナ)
1983年、兵庫県生まれ。2007年に京都工芸繊維大学で建築とデザインを専攻。卒業後、大阪のマーケティング・クリエイティビティエージェンシーでグラフィックデザイナーとして数年間働きました。
2010年から2011年にかけて、彼女はイタリアのフィレンツェで版画に対する情熱に目覚め、国際版画芸術学校「イル・ビゾンテ」でエッチングを学びました。彼女は伝統的な技法、特にアクアチントに特化し、アルファベットをモチーフとしたイラストやグラフィック作品を制作しました。彼女の作品は個展やグループ展、アートフェアなどで展示されています。
Born in Hyogo, Japan in 1983, graduated in Architecture and Design from the Kyoto Institute of Technology in 2007. After graduating, she worked as a graphic designer at a marketing and creativity agency in Osaka for several years. In 2010-2011, she pursued her passion for printmaking in Florence, Italy, studying etching at the International School of Graphic Arts "Il Bisonte." She specialized in traditional techniques, particularly aquatint, and created illustrations and graphic works centered around alphabet motifs. Her works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, as well as art fairs.
