この度THE LOOP GALLERYは、2026年5月8日（金）より、EVERANDARTとのコラボレーションのもと、 Schoko Tanaka による個展「Asphalt Meadows」を開催いたします。

本展では、壁画、刺繍、イラストレーションといった複数のメディアを横断し、メキシコの豊かな色彩を背景に都市と自然の関係性を再構築する試みが展開されます。アスファルトに覆われた都市の表層においてなお持続する「生態の記憶」を主題に、視覚と触覚の両側面から、都市に内在する自然のかたちを浮かび上がらせます。

初日にはアーティスト在廊のもと、オープニングレセプションを開催いたします。ぜひご高覧ください。

THE LOOP GALLERY is pleased to present "Asphalt Meadows," a solo exhibition by Schoko Tanaka, organized in collaboration with EVERANDART, opening on May 8, 2026 (Friday).

In this exhibition, Tanaka works across textile and painting to reimagine the relationship between urban environments and the natural world, informed by the rich colors of Mexico. Centered around the idea of ecological memory that persists beneath the asphalt surface of the city, the works reveal forms of nature embedded within urban space through both visual and tactile experience.

An opening reception will be held on the first day of the exhibition, with the artist in attendance. We warmly invite you to join us.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

本展 Asphalt Meadows (アスファルト・メドウズ)では、都市空間における動物的・植物的な記憶の持続を制作の出発点としています。刺繍や絵画、テキスタイルを通して、自分の中に存在する断片的な生態の形を探っていきました。

私が描く馬は草原にいるのではなく、その大きな身体で画面を占め、存在感やかたちを強く示します。一方で蛇は、表面に溶け込むように、あるいは一部を隠しながら、よりひっそりと現れます。こうした違いは、都市における自然のあり方を表しています。自然は失われたのではなく、不均一に可視化され、直接的に、時には控えめに私たちの前に現れるからです。

ここでの「メドウ（草原）」は、牧歌的な風景ではなく、ひとつの状態のことを指しています。都市で目にする自然のかたちは、つくられた環境の中やその隙間に、あるいはそれに抗うようにして存在し続けています。

展示されているテキスタイルの作品は、そのような都市素材の硬質さに対する柔らかな抵抗として働き、その硬さに対して触覚的な変化を与えてくれるのです。

Asphalt Meadows explores the persistence of animal and vegetal memory within urban space.Through embroidery, painting, and textile, fragmented ecologies emerge.

Horses without fields— their bodies dominating the composition—emphasize presence and form, while snakes appear more subtly, embedded within surfaces or partially obscured. This difference reflects how nature is encountered in the city. Not absent, but unevenly visible, sometimes direct and sometimes hidden.

Here, the meadow is not a pastoral image, but a condition: something that survives beneath, within, and against the built environment.

The textile works becomes a form of soft resistance to the hardness of urban material, introducing a tactile counterpoint to its rigidity.
