PRESS RELEASE:
The Loop Gallery is pleased to announce Takaya Kanoko’s solo exhibition “Skin Ship” from May 24th to June 8th, 2024.
Growing up in Kyoto, Kanoko was immersed in Indonesian culture and aesthetics from an early age, influenced by her mother who frequently visited Bali. Since 2014, Kanoko has relocated her base to Indonesia and has been involved in creative activities such as painting, mixed media, and sculptural works.
Kanoko develops deeper into the mysteries of life and introspective aspects after “Indonesia” series, which drew inspiration from traditional culture such as masks, batik techniques, and motifs.
Using variety of materials such as fabric, plaster, resin and more, Kanoko aimed to capture a sense of softness and presence reminiscent of living beings in her artworks. By layering techniques like painting, molding, and polishing, a new realm of art has emerged, diverging from traditional paintings and sculptures.
The unique forms, curves resembling the human body and organs, and a texture akin to human skin infuse the artwork with a pulsating vitality, as if breathed to life by her hand. They speak to the viewer’s subconscious with the intimacy and comfort of family and friends.
Immerse yourself in our exhibition, presenting 16 new artworks that delve into the artist’s recent themes of “listening to oneself” and the intimate connection with “tactile sensation”.
The exhibition’s title “Skin Ship” usually used to describe physical contact between individuals, takes on a new meaning in her artworks. They serve as mirrors, reflecting viewer’s heart, and enabling a form of “Skins Ship” with oneself.
Experience the primitive sense of touch amidst a world browning in “should bes’”.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
I’ve become consciously aware of my “sense of touch” over the past few years.
Looking back, I realize I had a fascination with tactile sensation since childhood, often consciously shaping them into tangible forms.
My body knew it first. Over the years, the “shape” and “texture” of things I create have increasingly become more visually translating into touch sensations.
I try to be zen when creating my works and instead let my hands move freely.
Each creating process matters - my style is not to set a predetermine endpoint.
The final image becomes clear at the very end or sometimes it’s immediately apparent, while other times it takes multiple changes before it emerges. “Color” is always fresh and vibrant for me.
The final form changes with subtle differences and try obsession lies in paying attention to these small details.
Symphony of discovery with new materials, coupled with trial and error, served as the inspiration behind the creation of works for this exhibition.
Our minds are always active. Random thoughts from what to eat or wear. And then, there’s another version of ourselves living in the realm of the subconscious. The another version of ourselves that we cannot even fully recognize. The sense of touch is something that is close to us.
The ground we stand on, the clothes we wear.. everything we touch is felt through our sense of touch.
Touch seems to be the most rapidly developing sense among the five senses.
The fact that the body and uterine wall begin to differentiate around the 10th week of pregnancy deepened my interest in touch even further. Babies touch and put things in their mouths because it provides more reliable information than seeing or hearing.
We are all tactile beings when we are born. Touch is an extremely personal sensation that we perceive through our nerves. Listening to my soul, indulging in what brings me joy, simply feeling and relishing in that sensation skin to the touch of skin would be delightful, I believe.
